Behind the Scenes
The journey of a bean
The BeanstoGreens team have been working hard behind the scenes to bring awareness about the end-of-life of your average coffee cup. Through this journey, we experience first hand the grim reality about the sheer amount of coffee cups thrown away each day.

The BeanstoGreens project will be giving these cups a second life to bring joy the public by raising awareness in a fun and interactive way.

Conceptual sketches
The team began the project by brainstorming ideas for the form the coffee cups will take.

Material Sourcing
Our team set up collection bins in the University of Sheffield Arts Tower. We also went on rounds across the city to gather coffee cups that have been thrown away.

The cups are then washed, dried and sorted by size. They are now ready for a second life.

Used coffee grounds from cafes are gathered for fertilizer that will be used for the herb planting.

Prototyping
The team experimented with various means to build a self supporting structure use the recycled cups. We eventually finalized stapling the cups together to form a natural curved structure. The organic growth of the coffee cups we collected forms a terrain that is reminiscent of nature.
